Pappy Van Winkle, originally a traveling salesman, became the president of Stitzel-Weller Distillery and shaped the bourbon industry through his unwavering dedication to quality. His son, Julian Jr., continued the legacy, founding J.P. Van Winkle and Son and creating the Old Rip Van Winkle label for his son, Julian III. Taking over in 1981, Julian III revived the brand, purchasing the Old Hoffman Distillery for barrel storage and bottling. When Buffalo Trace approached him in 2002, he accepted, allowing the bourbon to expand while maintaining the high standards Pappy had set.
