The 2016 Beaune 1er Cru les Epenottes was reduced to four barrels this vintage, fully destemmed with 35% new oak. It has a vivid blueberry and black cherry bouquet with a touch of crushed rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite linear and strict with a slight chalkiness/mineralité toward the tensile finish. You can feel the nascent energy here.
This is notably earthier with its mix of red and dark berry fruit, sauvage and pungent earth nuances. There is a lovely sense of energy to the round, supple and seductively textured medium weight flavors that exude a subtle salinity on the finish that exhibits a touch of youthful asperity.
